>>Also the writers would have to come up with ideas on how Atlantis gets by.

Yes! And imagine what bunch of possible stories that would have opened up. I would have loved to see the guys and gals struggle with the need to stock up supplies from sources in Pegasus, see some of the scarcity showing in their looks. You know, mismatching uniform parts, patched up clothes, local fabric starting to make an appearance in their clothing etc. etc. Trying to make their own ammo, trying to make the ammo they have last, getting used to local food. The original people of the first wave of crew having reminiscences of their first year in Pegasus when the were cut of *completely* without even the more or less regular Daedalus-runs.

That is *exactly* what I would have loved to see: Atlantis cut off from earth and the consequences of that.

>>I don't think the writers want to deal with stuff like that.

In this case it would be hard to get around that with SGU. They'll be cut off from earth with no way to go back, not even for people they lost on their way on any planet. So that seems *exactly* to be what the writers *want* to deal with, if what we know from SGU so far is any indication.

>>Maybe also because it has been done already.

Ha! As if. Never properly IMHO. Yes, Atlantis was cut off from earth for the first year but since they knew they would probably not be able to go back, they would have packed a lot of stuff and come prepared. We didn't *really* see them massively suffer lack of anything and being really forced to live from what Pegasus provides. Okay, there was the one or other ep that dealt with trying to trade for food but I never had the impression they were really *desperately* short of something and had to deal with that.

>>Hey, they could end the show like they started it. Atlantis with no contact to Earth. But this time the people on Atlantis are not really that unhappy about it. ;)<<

This is actually what I would love to see for the end of the series. Atlantis becoming independent and the people there starting to view Pegasus as their home. But it won't happen. I don't think TPTB have the guts to do that, too bad.

Actually, what I would love to see as an end for the series is pretty much Cesperanza's "Victors" on screen. Okay, a slightly adapted version of it since Elizabeth isn't there anymore.

Anyway, even if they wouldn't have gone with the whole independence-thing, I think they missed a great opportunity to open up a whole bunch of interesting storylines by having the earth-dialing-crystal not destroyed.
